Dyslexia Screening and Diagnostic Evaluation

Dawn Werts Philbin is a speech language pathologist who has specialized in the integration of speech, language, and Dyslexia therapy over the past 15 years. She has been a practicing speech language pathologist since 1988.

Dyslexia Evaluation and Screening offered at The Speech Language Dyslexia Clinic, P.C. include:

Complex Dyslexia Screen: (for First Graders to adults)

This entails approximately three to four hours of time spent with Dawn completing both standardized and nonstandardized assessments. It requires approximately one hour to score assessments and analyze data. Then the parents, sometimes the student, and Dawn sit down for a VERBAL consultation to discuss if the child has signs or symptoms of Dyslexia. Also discussed in the consultation would be treatment recommendations, (if the child has signs and symptoms of Dyslexia), and suggested classroom accommodations that will assist in keeping the child successful in the classroom via IEP or 504 plan. Consultations average around two hours. There is no written report and a diagnosis is not made. Parents are asked to take notes during the verbal consultation and are responsible to convey the information to other sources as necessary.

Cost: $750.00
(A written report can be requested for a total of $1,100.)

It is important to note that the Dyslexia screen is rarely helpful in getting a school to provide recommended services. It is most helpful for parents who want to know how to help their child, and plan on pursuing specialized dyslexia tutoring outside of school at their own expense.

SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY: PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL DESCRIBING THE CHILD OF CONCERN, YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION, WHILE SPECIFYING THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A DYSLEXIA SCREEN. ALL INQUIRIES ARE DEALT WITH VIA EMAIL.

Full Diagnostic Dyslexia Testing using the Susan Barton method

If the child was born premature, weighed under five pounds at birth, has or had a history of seizures, or has sustained a head injury, then they need to be diagnosed by a neuro-psychologist, or other medical professionals. They are NOT appropriate for this type of testing.

The Full Diagnostic Dyslexia Testing IS appropriate for kids age five through high school. What this type of testing entails:

a. A face to face parent interview, in which parents have gathered the following information and are prepared to discuss BEFORE THE CONSULTATION: concerns, development of milestones, ALL prior report cards, ALL interventions attempted and results, ALL prior educational and private assessments, Dibels/fluency scores, ALL prior and current IEP’s or 504 plans, at least three work samples that the child did completely independently with no outside influence. Be prepared for the interview to last approximately three hours.

b. If via the interview, it looks as if Dyslexia is a possibility, and parents wish to proceed, then testing is scheduled. Testing takes approximately five hours. It can be done in one or two sessions.

c. After testing, allow ten weeks, for the diagnostic report to be completed.

d. After the ten weeks, sometimes sooner, the consultation is scheduled. Allow approximately three hours for this consultation. There is a lot of information to discuss. The diagnostic report is a very thorough report, often between 50 and 70 pages long, documenting the child’s developmental, medical and educational history, PROOF of dyslexia if it is there, treatment recommendations, recommendations for classroom accommodations via IEP or 504 plans. Along with this diagnostic report, the parent is given a HOW TO PROCEED packet, which was prepared by Susan Barton as guidance to aid parents in how to maximize the use of the information in this diagnostic report to best benefit their child.

Total cost is $2,500.00. ($300.00 is due at the face to face consultation. $2,200.00 is due at the first testing session.)

SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY: PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL DESCRIBING THE CHILD OF CONCERN, YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION, AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SCHEDULE THE FACE TO FACE CONSULTATION. ALL INQUIRIES ARE DEALT WITH VIA EMAIL.
